Informed Consent FOR RF AND IPL TREATMENT
Congratulations on choosing the InMode Envision Radiofrequency (RF) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) as a long term treatment for your dry eye!
Contraindications for the procedure:
~Any cancerous or suspicious lesions in the treatment area
~Active infections, open sores or healing problems.
~Recent use of photosensitive products such as: Accutane, tetracycline antibiotics such as doxycycline or minocycline, Retinol, Retin-A, glycolic/salicylic acids. Please see below for instructions on when to discontinue these products prior to treatment.
~Autoimmune conditions such as lupus, scleroderma, vitiligo
~Use of blood thinners
~Pregnancy
~Tattoos or piercings in the treatment area (tape/patches may be applied to the tattoo to protect them)
~Recent botox injections in the treatment area (within 2 weeks of treatment).
~Any implanted medical electrical device (examples: pacemaker, insulin pump, pain pump). The procedure can be performed if the device can be turned off for the treatment.
~For IPL only, skin types V or above on the Fitzpatrick skin scale are contraindicated.
Please advise staff or the doctor if any of the above apply to you.
Pre-treatment Instructions:
~Do NOT tan or use any self tanner on your face for 4 weeks prior to treatment.
~IPL affects pigmentation. Treatment on un-tanned/natural skin will give the best results
~Discontinue any products containing Retin-A, retinol, glycolic/salicylic acids and any irritants at least 1 week prior and 1 week after each treatment.
~Discontinue any tetracycline antibiotic at least 2 weeks prior treatment.
The Day of Treatment:
~Do NOT wear ANY makeup for your treatment days (including foundation)
~Remove contact lenses
~Wear long hair tied back away from face and neck
~Remove any eyelash extensions
~For men, if treatment includes your whole face, shave close to the skin to avoid any temporary or permanent hair loss.
~Expect the treatment to take 1 hour
~Avoid taking any aspirin or NSAIDs to minimize risk for bruising.
What to expect after treatment:
~A mild sunburn feeling, including redness and mild swelling. These effects typically resolve within a few hours to 3 days following treatment.
~If any vascular lesions are treated (rosacea or blood vessels on the face/cheeks), bruising is NORMAL, and is a good sign that the vessel has been removed. This could last up to 2 weeks. If you do not see bruising, it is not, however, a sign that the treatment did not work.
~In the week following treatment, your face may develop a fine crust look. DO NOT PICK at any scabs that may form. Keep the area moist and clean. These areas will flake off on their own.
~Small blisters can occur. Keep the skin clean and they will resolve in 2-3 days following treatment. If they persist, call our office.
~For the first 48 hours following treatment, avoid direct sun exposure when possible. Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen (SPF 30-50). Continue wearing sunscreen for 2 weeks following treatment. Do not wear sunscreen to any future treatment sessions.
~You may apply aloe or use a cool compress/ice pack for comfort or swelling. Never apply the cold pack directly to the skin.
~Gently clean your face twice per day with a mild cleanser. Keep the area moist with a gentle moisturizer. You can wear make-up following treatment as long as the skin is not broken.
~Avoid strenuous activity for 1-2 days following treatment as sweat may irritate the skin.
~Do not shave/perform any hair removal, in the area treated, for 1 week following treatment.
~Avoid extreme heat, such as a sauna or hot tub, or extended exposure to freezing conditions until your face is fully healed.
What to expect during the treatment (approximately 45-60 min):
Radiofrequency (RF) is the first step. For this, you will be laid back, your face will be cleaned and some gel will be applied to both your upper and lower eyelids. The procedure takes about 20 minutes, 10 minutes per eye. A small probe, specifically designed for the ocular region, will be used to gently massage the eyelids and surrounding areas. This will feel like a hot stone massage. It will get warm, 107-109 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature for treatment. If this gets too warm for you, please tell the doctor and they can adjust the settings.
After RF, the gel will be removed and we may use a tool to express any stagnant/thick oil out of your meibomian glands.
The next step is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). Specific parameters need to be determined that are unique to each patient. Before treatment, your doctor will be determining your skin type to verify the correct parameters are set. For IPL, eye protection is needed. Depending on the treatment goal and your anatomy, a protective lens will be placed in your eye or some goggles will be placed over your eyes. Gel will be applied again to your eyelids and cheeks/nose and any other areas being treated. During the treatment, you may feel some mild, brief discomfort. It can be described as similar to the sensation of a thin rubber band snap. The doctor will be consistently checking on your comfort level. You may also feel a brief, warm sensation as the energy is delivered to the treatment area. The light from the IPL device is bright, but with the protection of the goggles or the corneal shields, your eyes are protected. This procedure can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes.
For optimal results, 4 treatment sessions are recommended, each spaced 3-4 weeks apart. Individual results vary, but most people notice a gradual improvement in their symptoms throughout their treatment sessions. After the initial treatments, one or two treatments per year may be needed for maintenance.
Possible risks to the procedure:
Discomfort, bruising, swelling, redness, itching, skin inflammation or irritation, allergic reaction, scarring, blistering, hypopigmentation (whitening of the skin in darker pigmented individuals), mottling of the skin vascularity and pigmentation, and other possible unforeseen complications.
Burns, ulcers and scarring (temporary or permanent) are possible but highly unlikely.
Eye injury is possible but highly unlikely with proper eye protection provided during your sessions.
The procedure may cause some mild discomfort that is manageable without any pain medication. The days to weeks following treatment, color changes such as redness, hyperpigmentation (brown/red discoloration) or hypopigmentation (lightening of skin) may occur in treated skin. Unprotected sun exposure in the 2 weeks following treatment may lead to significant sunburn or blistering.
